Meconium Peritonitis

Abstract
Mecomium peritonitis is a serious complication of intestinal perforation which follows the extrution of meconium into the peritoneal cavity prior to the birth of the child. The diagonosis of meconium peritonitis is usually not difficult. The symptoms are those of, intestinal obstruction: maternal hydramnios, distention, bilious vomiting, and abnormalities in meconium evacuation. Roentgenographic studies are most helpful and maybe diagnostic, since in the majority of instances the intraperitoneal meconium will calcify, and such calcifications, together with other evidences of alimentary tract obstruction can. be observed on plain abdominal film. Usually necrosis and perforation of the intestine is due to obturate. obstruction associated with meconium ileus or to an intrinsic type of obstruction such as atresia or stenosis of the small bowel.
We experienced a case of meconium peritonitis with ileal perforation in 2 days old female neonate which was treated by temporary ileostomy.
